Carl Tanzler was a man obsessed with finding his soul mate. He would claim even as a child that he was visited by ancestors who shared with him a visage of his one true love.
Now Carl here might sound a little fanciful, but one day while he was at work, he would discover his dream in the flesh. His soul mate had arrived in the form of the beautiful Elena, a young Cuban-American woman. She was brought into the hospital he worked at suffering from tuberculosis. Carl was devasted that just as suddenly as he had found his love, she was be taken away by death.
Carl refused to obey fate and would instead defy the inevitable.
